A very important work from the Middle Ages, written by Paulo Osório, an author from Braga, born at the end of the 4th century. This work is the first major treatise on universal history that deals with history not from the perspective of a particular nation, but from the point of view of the universal man. ‘Historiarum adversus paganos’, written in 417, the text is set in the context of Christian polemics against paganism, reflecting Osório’s view of Universal History as a manifestation of divine providence. Influenced by Saint Augustine, the author sought to demonstrate that the disasters of the Roman Empire were not the result of Christianization, but rather of the moral degeneration of the pagans themselves.
