VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, of one of the most important Portuguese navigation treatises published in the 16th century. Considered a fundamental work, the treatise De Navigatione demonstrates that Pedro Nunes not only suffered criticism from pilots, but also from erudite personalities. The work contains a discussion about mathematical demonstrations as opposed to philosophical arguments, a topic that sparked debate among European intellectuals at the time and in which Pedro Nunes himself participated. Born in Coimbra, Diogo de Sá was a cousin of the poet Sá de Miranda and Mem de Sá, governor of Brazil. As the dates of his birth and death were unknown, he left Lisbon for India when he was very young. Showing great courage in the fights against the king of Calicut or in the second siege of Diu, among other battles, D. João III appointed him captain and foreman of the ships that established the connection between India and Malacca. Never stopping to nurture his erudition, he returned to Portugal and was appointed "master" of Mathematics at the University of Coimbra in 1538, with Pedro Nunes as a colleague, alternating his academic life between Coimbra and Paris. He then published, in the city of Luz, in 1549, this treatise, one of the most important of his time. Very rare and valuable.
