FIRST EDITION. One of the most important historical works published in the 18th century, being, in fact, a History of Portugal. The volumes of Evidence include an enormous amount of documents of relevance to political, social, economic and ecclesial history, some of them lost in the fires resulting from the great earthquake of 1755. In addition to these of a historical nature, some literary documents were also published here, namely the collection of several works by D.Duarte, the Doctrine of Lourenço de Cáceres to the Infante D. Luís, the Prayer of D. Duarte in praise of philosophy, the Itinerary of the journey made by D. Afonso, Count of Ourem to the Council of Basel and the translation of an Oration addressed to D. Afonso V by Vasco Fernandes de Lucena, among many others. The edition is a true monument of Portuguese typography from the first half of the 18th century, printed on solid linen paper, illustrated with an allegorical cover common to the Academy editions, numerous fancy capital letters, ornamental caps, finials, coats of arms of weapons, reproductions of coins, medals and seals, all in beautiful open copper plate engravings printed on separate text sheets. Very rare, important and valuable.
