New edition of one of the most important texts of the Arcadians, illustrated with a separate printed engraving representing the Bishop and the Dean. Published posthumously in 1802, O Hyssope was written in the epic style of Os Lusíadas, in a style purposely chosen to better highlight the ridiculous. Its theme is a question of ceremonial between the bishop of Elvas and the dean of the respective See. The poem ridicules feudal values, the scholastic mentality, gongoric poetry, the pomp of the aristocracy and the abuses practiced by the high clergy. Rare.
