D. João de Melo e Castro, born in Vila Viçosa, obtained a doctorate in Canons at the University of Salamanca, judge of Évora in the time of Bishop Cardinal D. Afonso, canon of Cape Verde. He was elected to the General Council of the Holy Office in 1536 and substitute for the main inquisitor, also a judge of the Casa da Suplicação. Chosen as bishop of Silves, he was confirmed in 1549, meeting a synod six years later where the Diocesan Constitutions were approved. The following year he was present at the important Council of Trent. The cardinal-infante D. Henrique appointed him his coadjutor, provisor and vicar general in the archbishopric of Évora, and having transferred to Lisbon, in 1564, he resigned in his favor, having gathered the Synod to reform and update the Constitutions. The Constitutions of Évora were first published by Cardinal D. Afonso and printed in Lisbon, 1534, of which Inocêncio did not know a copy, but which is described in Samodães, 853. Soon after, and already by D. João de Melo were reprinted in Lisbon, by André de Burgos, 1565. Finally, and already reflecting the reforms and updates of the Synod convened by the Archbishop, the one of 1622, of which the present is a reprint, added with the “Rules of the Auditorium Ecclesiastical of the Archbishopric of Evora and its Relations and Consultations”. Rare.
