According to some, part of the work was written by Diderot and others. The fierce criticism contained in the work prevented its publication in France. Abbot Raybal, managed to print three copies in Paris, for Stoupe, having kept one of them, another sent to the printer and another to Geneva for the printing of the first edition. Originally published in 4 volumes plus an Atlas, from the second edition onwards it has a total of 10 volumes plus an Atlas. Each volume is illustrated with an engraving representing the relationship between Europeans and indigenous peoples, not always in a friendly way. Very rare.
