First edition, very rare, of this work that seeks to describe the state of the city of Lisbon at the end of the 18th century. It begins with a chapter on the reconstruction of the city after the 1755 earthquake, then describing streets, private houses, public buildings, fountains, theaters, farms, etc. It also has several chapters on uses and customs – processions, beggars, gastronomy, weddings, etc. – political organization, intrigues, culture, literature, arts, religion, as well as a chapter on Mafra. There follows a set of letters written by the author in 1777 and originally published separately in 1780 and a final chapter on the Marquis of Pombal entitled "Portrait Historique de Sásbtien Joseph Carvalho, comte d’Oeyras."
