FIRST EDITION. José Maria Latino Coelho (1825-1891), an army officer, teacher and politician, born in Lisbon, was forced to go to Spain because of his father's liberal ideals, only returning in 1834. After finishing his preparatory studies, he entered the School Polytechnic in 1839, from where he joined the Army studying Military Engineering. He enlisted in Infantaria in 1843, being shortly afterwards appointed a student ensign of the same regiment, having from then on a brilliant military career, passing to ensign in 1848, lieutenant in 1851, captain in 1864, major in 1868, lieutenant colonel in 1877, colonel in 1878 and brigadier general in 1888. In 1851 he was appointed substitute lecturer in the chair of Mineralogy and Geology at the Polytechnic School. Affiliated with the Regenerador party, he was elected deputy for Lisbon in the supplementary elections of 1854, making his first parliamentary speech on March 28, 1855. He was again deputy in the general elections from 1856 to 1860. the issues that agitated Europe and on the evolution of democratic doctrine, later starting to collaborate more actively in that newspaper. In 1851 he founded “A Semana”, a literary weekly collaborating with the main writers of the time. Among Latino Coelho's most notable books is this Political and Military History of Portugal, which deals with the Peninsular War and is illustrated with three maps and military charts at the end of the third volume. Rare and treasured.
