IMPORTANT AND RARE COMPILATION of 58 documents in Arabic relating to the history of the Portuguese discoveries, namely their relationship with the Arab peoples. The work, organized in chronological order, lists a set of epistolography sent from the Muslim kingdoms to the kings of Portugal D. Manuel and D. João III, as well as to several viceroys and important personalities, among them letters to Vasco da Gama, Nuno Fernandes de Ataíde, Francisco Alvares, Count of Linhares, Afonso de Albuquerque, etc. The edition is bilingual, having in one of the columns the original text and the respective translation into Portuguese in the other, with the addition of notes at the end of each document. Born in the city of Damascus, Br. João de Sousa came to Lisbon in 1750. He was entrusted with two diplomatic missions to North African states, the first in 1773 and 1774 to Morocco and the second on a commission to Algiers from 1786 to 1790. He was also professor of Arabic language in Lisbon in 1794.
