Durer was an important Renaissance painter who was in contact with the Portuguese merchant Rodrigo Fernandes, for whom he painted a St. Jerome that is now in the Museum of Ancient Art. In Antwerp, the directors of the Feitoria de Portugal showered Durer with gifts, while he returned them with his works, mainly engravings, ending up influencing Portuguese art of this period. The first edition of this work was published in the magazine “Archeologia Artistica”, fasc. IV, Oporto, 1877.
