RARE EDITION of a pioneering work in the history of science and mathematics. Published for the first time in 1624 by Jean Appier Hanzelet, in the presses of the University of Pont-à-Mousson, and of which only three copies are known, it was translated into English in 1633, and between 1629 and 1680 the work saw another 25 new editions in France. Some researchers question the authorship attributed to Jean Leucheron, proposing other names, and one of the most recent and complete studies on the work proposes Jean Appier Hanzelet, the printer of the first editions, as the probable author. (cf. Heeffer, Albrecht) Clearer are the influences of other authors on the text. About a third of the work is occupied with arithmetic problems and had as a direct source the work of Claude Bachet “Problemes plaisants”, just as the geometric problems are inspired by the Renaissance tradition known as “practical geometry” or the “magic” problems in various works published in the early seventeenth century. Divided into three parts, the work contains in the first and second arithmetic, geometric, astrological problems, etc., and a considerable part of problems about “curious secrets” or better said, about illusionism. The third part of this edition is entirely occupied with the pyrotechnic arts. Profusely illustrated in the text, with dozens of open wood engravings. Very rare and important.
