FIRST EDITION, extremely rare, of the only important ancient book dedicated to fortifications. Luís Serrão Pimentel, born in Lisbon in 1613 and dying in the same city after a fall from a horse, was an artillery lieutenant general, cosmographer and senior engineer in the Kingdom, and it is to him that the first Military Academy in Portugal was organized. In this work of his "the author conveyed to the prosterity an evident proof of his not ordinary erudition, and skill in the field of military sciences […] and this work can be considered as one of the most exact and instructive that came out printed up to that time. " (Inoc.).
