ROUSSEAU (Gabriel M.)

[SÉRIE de Reis de Portugal]. Lisboa: [1736 ?].

20 [de 24] grav.; 240×160 mm. Trimmed, wormholes; stained. Lacking portraits of Conde D. Henrique, D. Sancho II, D. João III, D. Henrique and D. Filipe III (IV of Spain).

Set of 20 prints from the Kings of Portugal series published by Gabriel Rousseau. According to Ernesto Soares, the engravings were printed to appear in the ‘Genealogical History of the Portuguese Royal House’, of which he knew some copies in which they appeared. The complete series consists of 24 portraits with the kings of Portugal from Count D. Henrique to D. João V, all in half length within an oval frame with a reticulated background, inscribed on a rectangular background with parallel lines. According to Ernesto Soares, the engraver used another series that illustrates the work ‘Anacephaleoses…’, printed in 1621, as a model for his engravings.
