WESTALL (Richard)
VICTORIES of the Duke of Wellington from drawings by […]. London: Printed for Rodwell and Martin, 1819.

iv, 48 pp., 12 grav.: il.; 305 mm.

Beautiful album of 12 hand-colored aquatint engravings representing as many battles in Wellington, accompanied by the respective explanatory text. The twelve engravings illustrate the battles of Toulose, Vimieiro, Porto, Talavera, Bussaco, Badajoz, Salamanca, Madrid, Vitoria, Pyrenees, S. Sebastian and Waterloo. Richard Westall (1765-1836) was a painter and illustrator, known for his portraits of Byron. He studied at the Royal Academy School of Arts from 1785, becoming an associate in 1782 and elected academician in 1794. His neo-classical style caught the attention of his contemporaries, considered by many to be an extraordinary artist, standing out as a prolific illustrator and watercolourist, contributing to works by Walter Scott, Lord Byron or to editions of works by Shakespeare and Milton by John Boydell. Very rare.
